Artificial Sweeteners and Your Fitness

I get lots of emails asking about my position on artificial sweeteners. I mention briefly in my free version of the Blow-Torch Diet ebook that I am against them and I advise all readers to stay away from them.

(you can download your free ebook here:)
The Blow-Torch Diet

I also mention the herbal extract, Stevia, as a safe and natural alternative. I give it to my kids - thats how much I believe in it. Me and Jeri-Jo do not allow them (or us) to consume chemically altered sweeteners.

I also mention that I will be addressing some of the finer details about this subject in my book, "Fatness to Fitness".

In the meantime - here is an article that Pam forwarded to me last week. (In her email Pam wrote, "Joey, you are on the cutting edge!") - in some regards, she's right - however, being on the cutting edge sometimes just involves using a little bit of foresight and some 'universal' common sense.

Before you read the article - please be warned that there is information that sits 'between the lines' - and most who read this will not pick up on this vital info - but I am making it a point to address it solidly in my book (I know many of you have been waiting very patiently for the book - please note - we are getting closer! & are hoping to have it published in the first half of 2008).

Read the article for all that its worth - but also remember - the most important stuff is not in black and white - it's 'below the surface'.

Here is the article in the Wall Street Journal:

Artificial Sweeteners Replaced by Natural Ingredients?

Thank you so much for speaking on the subject of artificial sweetners. I agree with you very much. Whenever, I purchase anything...I check the ingredients at all times..I think that it is important to be an educated consumer...and being in charge of your own health and fitness means that you should do research and use common sense. The FDA ...is more concerned with the all mighty dollar and not enough about human interests...Keep up the good work Joey...you are an absolute voice of concern and reason......

Ever notice though, that the list of ingredients is hidden at the back of the packages, or on a side, and in such fine print you have to bring a magnifying glass when you go shopping? If I can't find the list, can't read it, or can't pronounce more than one ingedient, I will not buy the product!

Mss produced stevia? How is that going to keep it safe? Maybe we should stock up as much as we can now, while it's still as natural as it can be (it is still manipulated of course), before the Coke people ruin another good thing. And the problem with coke and other sodas isn't just the sweeteners, it's all the other junk they put into them!

    Stay alert! Sarah

Show me some evidence aside from a news article please. I'm a biochemist and I've seen no evidence to prove either long term damage or side effects to artificial sweeteners.

To me, that article says that since the world is adopting a healthfood atmosphere, they're going to cater to the folks who buy into it with the latest 'all natural' buzzword.

Most people still think MSG is bad. Truth is, it's better for you than salt, and everything negative about it stemmed from the fact that a few chinese restaurants used it to make rotten meat taste good, and it could be used to make PCP.

People with a great deal more qualification than some random journalist in the US, EU and Australia have published that they find sucralose and maltodextrin to be perfectly safe. In fact, the only people who think it isn't are organic nuts and a few people in Australia (NICNAS) running the berkeley carinogen test.

In case you aren't familiar with the test, let me introduce you: To determine that sucralose *might* have a damaging effect on the thymus, they injected 3000 mg of sucralose into the rat each day for 28 days (typical gestation period). Let me put this into perspective for you. I imagine, as muscular as you are, you weigh at least 225lbs. You are 900 times larger than that rat. In order for you to consume the same amount on scale, you would have to consume TWO HUNDRED SEVENTY cans of diet coke with splenda a day. In the end, even they concluded that it was indeed, not harmful.

I hope you can see why I consider the act injecting a creature you are 900 times larger than with 75 times more of a substance by scale than you can possibly ingest, to be a wee bit short of hard scientific evidence. Having graduated from the school that invented the procedure, I can say it's not one of our proudest moments. Bear in mind, this was pure sucralose, the surcalose content in splenda itself is about half and half with maltodextrin. Not to mention the fact that you aren't, to the best of my knowledge, a rat.

If you want to address organichlorides, I could point out that almost everything fits into some form of toxicity group. Gluatamate molecules for example are excitotoxins, and potent ones, and they are found in most everything you eat. However, the human body uses it to regulate your metabolism (maybe you should add that to you diet).

Don't even get me started on the absurdly lax standards the FDA has in place for what qualifies as 'organic.' You have read them, haven't you?
